Requirements of the role
We have an opportunity a Governance & Policy Senior Associate to join our Sector Performance Directorate.
The directorate supports Ofwat’s objective to be an assertive voice in strategic and investment decision-making for the sector, working with other regulators and governments by shaping the future direction and transformation of the sector through alignment with government and other stakeholders, and leading innovation. The Directorate drives up sector and company performance by regularly, visibly, and proactively challenging companies on their performance, using data and operational expertise.
We are Ofwat, the Water Services Regulation Authority, a non-ministerial government department responsible for regulating the water sector in England and Wales.
We are at the source of everyday life. We help the sector build trust and confidence with customers, the environment and wider society: keeping our water flowing, ensuring water bills don’t cost a penny more than needed, and holding water companies to account.
Our work is high-profile and fast-moving, within a dynamic and agile environment. The work that you’ll be involved in every day will help us to deliver our strategy, to make us the regulator we want to be and help the sector to deliver for customers and society.

Job description
The Role
We are looking for an experienced policy professional with a background in assessing corporate governance activities to join our expanding Policy & Governance team. The overall aim of the team is to ensure water companies are well run through having the right board leadership and governance arrangements in place. We lead on delivering and overseeing our governance frameworks as well as the design, implementation and delivery of new regulatory governance policy. We seek to ensure governance arrangements are transparent, allowing Ofwat and other stakeholders to scrutinise, challenge and address issues of legitimacy. This work is at the cutting edge of what Ofwat does and is pivotal in light of the recently announced recently launched Water (Special Measures) Act 2025.
You will apply regulatory policy and understand the implications of a company’s governance arrangements and behaviours for its wider performance, so as to support the team’s objectives of driving wider sector accountability and performance. The role will involve working on both existing water company governance oversight workstreams as well as new policy areas.
