Worcestershire Parkway railway station is an interchange station located in Worcestershire in the West Midlands, situated where the Birmingham–Bristol line intersects with the Cotswold Line. The station opened to passengers in 2020 and provides connectivity between regional and long-distance rail services, improving transport links across Worcestershire and the wider region.
The project was promoted and primarily funded by Worcestershire County Council as part of a wider programme to improve regional connectivity and support economic growth. Prior to the station’s construction, the two intersecting railway lines did not offer a convenient interchange in the area, meaning passengers travelling between key destinations often had to change trains at more distant stations such as Birmingham New Street railway station or Cheltenham Spa railway station.
The development of Worcestershire Parkway demonstrates how third-party organisations can bring forward rail infrastructure investments using the processes set out in the RNIF. The project required close collaboration between the scheme promoter, the ORR, operators and Network Rail to ensure the station could be safely integrated into the existing railway and delivered in accordance with rail industry standards.
Funding for the project was primarily provided through a combination of local authority investment and government grant funding. In total, the station cost approximately £20 million to deliver. By combining local funding with rail industry expertise in project development and delivery, the scheme was able to progress from concept through to construction within a relatively short timeframe.

Projects such as Worcestershire Parkway demonstrate how external promoters, including local authorities, developers and other third parties, can work with the rail industry to bring forward new infrastructure that supports local economic development and improved transport connectivity. Frameworks such as the RNIF provide transparency around the governance and development of rail investment projects and help ensure that proposals are appropriately assessed before they are integrated into the national rail network.
The station has since become an important regional transport hub, providing new interchange opportunities and supporting improved connectivity across the Midlands and South West.
