Case Officer (13-month FTC – maternity cover)


Requirements of the role

The Case Officer will join the BSB Investigations and Enforcement team, responsible for investigating allegations against barristers and taking disciplinary or other action on behalf of the BSB.

The postholder will take responsibility for the investigation of potential breaches of the BSB Handbook, will handle their own caseload, taking autonomous, proactive decisions, in line with agreed decision-making criteria, regulations, policies and procedures, ensuring consistent decision-making.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Investigating conduct by gathering evidence
  • Drafting statements
  • Corresponding with barristers and witnesses throughout the investigation process
  • Drafting reports or recommendations on disposal
  • Managing a caseload, including cases at the Disciplinary Tribunal stage, which involves:
  • Drafting charges
  • Deciding on the content of case bundles and handling disclosure
  • Reposing to issues as cases progresses

Additionally, the post holder will be required to attend hearings and provide support to counsel at tribunals and appeals before the High Court.

 

Key skills and experience required to undertake the role include: 

  • Experience of legal procedures or litigation
  • Substantial experience of casework
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team, sharing knowledge and supporting other members of staff.
  • Knowledge of regulatory procedures and/or experience of working for a regulator is desirable but not essential.
  • A legal qualification, which includes the right to hold a practising certificate, is desirable.
