Lawyer (General Advisory)


Requirements of the role

The BSB’s Legal Team provides legal advice, litigation support, legal training and other legal support across the BSB’s regulatory functions. As a member of the team, the Lawyer (General Advisory) will support the Head of Legal in ensuring the provision of high quality, expert legal support and will contribute to the management of legal risk. The successful candidate will have scope to make a significant contribution to the work of the Bar Standards Board as well as the Legal Team.

Role responsibilities will include:

  • providing pragmatic and solution-focused “in-house” legal advice to colleagues across the organisation on a wide range of operational, policy and governance matters, including in particular:
  • contracts, memoranda of understanding and other agreements;
  • procurement policy and processes;
  • privacy, data protection and freedom of information;
  • drafting instructions and sourcing external advice as appropriate;
  • undertaking legal research.

Key skills and experience required to undertake the role include:

  • Qualified solicitor, barrister or equivalent (eligible to hold a practising certificate in England & Wales).
  • Strong general legal advisory experience, ideally in a public, regulatory or commercial environment.
  • Proven experience of drafting and negotiating commercial contracts and advising in relation to procurement.
  • Good understanding of privacy, data protection and information law and compliance principles.
  • Excellent analytical, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Sound judgment, integrity and a pragmatic approach to balancing legal risk with operational realities.
