Requirements of the role

The Role

You will play a leading role in driving the delivery of the CAA’s Environmental Sustainability Strategy, working across the CAA and with key external stakeholders. You will work very closely with all parts of the CAA to develop new policies and identify where new legislation or regulatory action may be needed to drive better environmental outcomes and embed sustainability into our decision making.  Working closely with government departments, industry and academia, the role will play an active part in driving forward the work the CAA needs to do to enable the industry to meet the UK’s Net Zero 2050 target. Working with our Sustainability Panel and our environmental reporting programme, the role will help to build the CAA’s understanding of aviation’s impact on people and the environment.

Core Accountabilities

Environmental Sustainability Strategy

  • Delivering the refresh of the Environmental Sustainability Strategy and working with colleagues across the CAA and the Sustainability Panel to drive and support delivery of the seven key areas of work identified in the Strategy . This will focus on enabling the transition to Jet Zero technology, providing environmental information to consumers and the public, as well as supporting projects within the Sustainability Team to ensure a strategic focus to our work.  A key part of the roles will be to help CAA teams across the organisation take concrete steps to embed sustainability into our work and decision-making, particularly in relation to our roles in enabling new innovative technology, Airspace Modernisation and Economic regulation.
  • Manage the Environmental Sustainability Strategy governance through the Sustainability Programme Board – an internal CAA delivery board.

Policy and legislation

  • Developing sustainability policies within the Sustainability Team on matters such as consumer information, zero emission flight, non-CO2, noise and air quality, and supporting other CAA teams where relevant to ensure sustainability is considered in their policy development.
  • Identify areas for more focussed legislation to support the CAA’s sustainability priorities and work with the Department for Transport colleagues to drive and manage the development of potential new legislation.

Stakeholder engagement

  • Managing the CAA’s Environmental Sustainability Panel, working closely with the Panel’s Chair to support the Panel in their operation and serving as the link between the Panel and the CAA by building strong relationships between Panel members and key internal CAA colleagues, including the CAA’s ExCo and Board. Support CAA staff in their engagement with the Panel to ensure that the relationship is effective, outcome focused and helps to deliver our Environmental Sustainability Strategy.
  • Manage the Sustainability Team’s approach for stakeholder engagement, including CAA colleagues and leadership team, government, academia, technical experts, industry and international entities to promote our sustainability work and enable wider understanding of sustainability issues across the CAA, including Net Zero and noise.
  • Support the ongoing development of the Sustainability Team through on-going development of the Sustainability Learning Hub and contributing to ongoing projects including sustainability reporting, consumer information provision, and the Jet Zero challenge, through strategic support, analysis and report writing.
